Taking place in the middle of a metropolis known as Seoul, 2 priests are tasked with exorcising demons from a young girl’s body. With a set of likable and charismatic leads, and a narrative that feels fresh, ‘The Priests‘ is a mystery drama that is full of surprises and twists when a girl shows signs of demonic possession. Her symptoms cannot be explained rationally, medically or scientifically.
Father Kim (played by Kim Yoon-Seok) believes that faith is the only salvation for her and prepares for one last exorcism, which could end very badly for all parties involved. But by his side, he has a new assistant, Deacon Choi (played by Gang Dong-Won), who is also tasked by the church to keep an eye on Father Kim and report back with anything out of ordinary.
Not taking gravity of the situation very seriously, Choi adds element of fun, hip and style to the film, becoming an important source of humor that is rarely found in exorcism films of the past. One of the most notable aspects of the film is the dynamic between two exorcists, who play off each other but ultimately serve the same purpose. They know a person’s life is at stake and it is their job to save her.
As a film that attempts to shake up Korea’s fall line-up, ‘The Priests’ is poised to become one of the most talked about film this year. Not only that, it’s a genre that has never been done in Korean cinema.
