2018 K-Dramas That Trended and Topped Google Search in Singapore

How many Korean dramas have you watched this year? Before 2018 come to an end, let’s take a minute to look back on the best K-Drama hits of the year that trended in Singapore!

Ever wondered what people search on the internet every day? According to Google, these dramas topped the list for the top trending Korean TV show searches in Singapore this year:

1) What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim

Definitely a crowd-favorite, What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim aired its first episode in Korea on June 6 and concluded its broadcast on July 26, 2018. The 16-episode series stars Park Seo Joon and Park Min Young, and viewers just can’t get enough of their perfect chemistry in the drama!

Besides trending in Singapore, this drama was also ranked #1 for the most search K-drama of 2018 on Google in South Korea itself, and it made its mark as one of the highest rated Korean dramas in cable television history too! 10/10 would watch this again.

2) A Korean Odyssey

Despite hitting headlines for the wrong reason where an accident took place on set and a staff member got severely injured, A Korean Odyssey managed to rake in much buzz with its stellar cast and bizarre storyline. Written by the Hong Sisters who are known for hit dramas You’re Beautiful (2009), My Girlfriend is a Nine-Tailed Fox (2010) and Master’s Sun (2013), this drama is a modern spin-off of the Chinese classic (Journey to the West) and it stars Lee Seung Gi, Oh Yeon-seo, Cha Seung Won, Lee Hong Gi and Jang Gwang.

Besides trending at No.2 in Singapore as “A Korean Odyssey”, the same drama also trended at No.9 with its Korean title, “Hwayugi“.

3) My ID is Gangnam Beauty

Based off a popular webtoon of the same name, My ID is Gangnam Beauty is one of the highest rated Korean dramas in cable television history (in Korea) and it stars Im Soo-hyang, Cha Eun-woo, Jo Woo Ri and Kwak Dong Yeon.

Albeit its typical storyline that revolves around falling in love with a reversed role of beauty and the beast (i.e. the best looking guy ends up with a girl who covered her entire face with plastic surgery), the drama still scored good viewerships during its broadcast and the cast members sunk in their roles really well. Easy to see why people would watch this drama again and again.

4) I Am Not A Robot

Starring Yoo Seung Ho, Chae Soo Bin and Um Ki Joon, I Am Not A Robot follows the quirky storyline of a chaebol with a high IQ of 159 who is allergic to human’s touch, but connects well with robots. In this drama, Chae Soo Bin plays the dual role of a human and a robot, making viewers fall in love with her various charms!

5) Radio Romance

Radio Romance did not make waves in Korea during its broadcast period, but it probably did out of Korea. It was a little awkward watching Kim So Hyun act as a couple with Yoon Doo Joon in a romance series since she played a role that was much older and mature, and in reality, this couple had a 10 years age gap too. But we got to say, their acting skills were still on point, so that was probably the reason that won fans over in this drama.

6) Terius Behind Me

Terius Behind Me fared fairly well in terms of its telecast ratings in Korea. The mystery drama stars So Ji Sub, Jung In-sun, Son Ho Jun and Im Se-mi, and it was aired on MBC from September 27 to November 15, 2018.

Notably, this drama has also created another milestone for So Ji Sub, as he brought home the Top Excellence Award (Actor) in a Wednesday-Thursday drama, as well as the Daesang Award (Grand Prize) at the 2018 MBC Drama Awards.

7) 100 Days My Prince

Hands down, 100 Days My Prince is one of the best dramas we’ve watched this year, so no surprise that it trended in Singapore as well! Do Kyung Soo (D.O.) and Nam Ji-hyun were an adorable couple in this historical series and both of them portrayed their roles really well, so much so we faced heavy withdrawal syndrome after the drama completed its run on TV.

Due to a fatal accident that caused him to lose his memories, the crown prince (played by D.O.) was turned into a pauper overnight and spent 100 days together with a peasant girl named Hong Shim (played by Nam Ji-hyun). During its air-time, ratings for the drama soared as high as 14% nationwide in Korea, making it the fourth highest-rated Korean drama in cable television history (in Korea). D.O. has also mentioned in an interview that he is now more recognised by the older generation (the ahjumma and grandmother generation) too. How cute!

8) The Great Seducer

Voted to be one of the worst K-dramas of the year (by experts in the entertainment industry), The Great Seducer revolves around the lives of the rich in their twenties, who begin to discover their true feelings while playing a dare game of love (aka truth or dare). There were many awkward acting scenes in this drama that made viewers cringe every now and then, but it was noteworthy to mention about Woo Do Hwan and Moon Ga Young, who both displayed great emotional acting that viewers could resonate with.

Despite the extremely low ratings, both Woo Do Hwan and Moon Ga Young were awarded the Excellence Award in a Monday-Tuesday Drama at the 2018 MBC Drama Awards, giving them the recognition that they deserve.

9) Hwayugi

Hwayugi trended at No.9 on Google search in Singapore based on Korean TV shows in 2018, and the same drama also trended at No.2 with its English title, “A Korean Odyssey“.

10) Suits

A remake drama based on the popular American TV series of the same name, Suits stars Jang Dong-gun and Park Hyung-sik as the leads and the drama did not disappoint as it lived up to its hype. The bromance relationship in this legal drama was so on point, easy to see why viewers loved the cast and plot. And besides, both leads looked stunning in their dashing suits too! This series marked Jang Dong-gun’s small-screen comeback in 6 years and we’re really hoping to catch more of his presence in the 2019 dramas!

This wraps up the Google Year in Search list for 2018 based on Korean TV Shows. How many of these dramas have you watched this year and which other drama hits will you recommend your friends to watch? 🙂

[COVER] A Star-Studded Awards Show at StarHub Night of Stars in Singapore

Held last Saturday (22 Dec) at the Sands Theatre in Marina Bay Sands, the inaugural StarHub Night of Stars saw 34 artistes from Hong Kong, Korea, Taiwan, China and Singapore making an appearance at the prestigious awards ceremony that celebrates the best of Asian entertainment on StarHub TV.

Among the attendees were veteran Hong Kong stars Joe Ma, Benz Hui, Chinese actress Qin Lan, Taiwanese actors Jasper Liu and Derek Chang, Korean sensation Lee Joon Gi, singer Jeong Sewoon, K-pop groups Cosmic Girls and A.C.E, and many more.

As first-time attendees at an awards ceremony, A.C.E brought home the 2018 StarHub Best Newcomer Award and performed two of their hits, “Cactus” and “Take Me Higher” to much fanfare. They also delivered a touching speech and thanked their agency and fans for the award.

“Thinking back on our trainee days, we always had our goals written on the wall and imagined ourselves standing on the big stage to receive an award like this. We can’t believe that this valuable and meaningful award has been awarded to us, and we are really thankful to our fans, staff and family members for standing by us even when we have nothing. Our agency’s president believed in us, paved the road for us, and worked hard with us all these while, hence we are really grateful from the bottom of our hearts.

If you guys did not choose us, we will not be here today. We’re the ones receiving the award but it’s all because of the love and support we’ve received since debut, and we’ll never forget these memories. We will work harder to show you a better side of A.C.E in 2019.” — A.C.E

In Singapore for the second time this year, Jeong Sewoon nabbed the 2018 StarHub Best Asian Drama OST Award with the original soundtrack (“It’s You”) that he sung for the hit Korean drama, “What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim”.

He belted out two songs that evening, “It’s You” and “Just U“, and added that he was honored to have worked with a good drama, and will return with better music in the upcoming year.

After dropping two hot performances “Secret” and “Save Me, Save You“, K-pop girl group Cosmic Girls (WJSN) was announced as the winner for the 2018 StarHub Most Charismatic Performance Award, where the members took turns to thank their fans from all over the world for this achievement.

The awards ceremony was concluded with an award presentation to Lee Joon Gi, the biggest winner of the night who took home the 2018 StarHub Best Male Asian Star Award for his excellent acting in Lawless Lawyer, one of the highest rated Korean dramas in Korea cable television history.

Thanking his fans for the endless love and support he’d received over the years, the actor revealed that he’ll return to Singapore soon for his Asia Tour in 2019, and asked fans to anticipate his future projects.

StarHub Night of Stars will be premiered on Hub VV Drama (StarHub TV Channel 855) on 13 Jan 2019, 7pm, and will be made available on Hub E City (StarHub TV Channel 111/825) on 19 Jan, 8:45pm and 4 Feb, 4:30pm. Don’t miss the full telecast to find out what other recognition awards were given out to other artistes in attendance!

[K-Travel] Tracing Back South Korea’s Educational History at the Seoul Education Museum

(Credit: 잘못사@ Naver)

Curiosity runs in everyone’s blood and it is inevitable that the more you visit Korea, the more you’ll be curious about its past. About how it managed to transform itself from a country full of poverty and political turmoil, into a country where the economy is blooming and where children nowadays are free to dream and become.

In a span of 50-odd years, South Korea has managed to become the benchmark for living standards in Asia. But ok that’s enough of dryness for one post. Enter the Seoul Education Museum! This humble little museum sits at the country’s cultural center, Bukcheon Hanok Village, and it houses various exhibits for people to learn and understand more about Korea’s education system.

(Credit: hyunks11@ Naver)

There are figurines that depicted how life was like back then, and also collections of old-school antiques that could be found scattered across the museum, giving us an insight of what life was like for children in the past. But the crowd favorite was definitely the display of Korean uniforms from the Joseon Dynasty up till the present!

While it is interesting to see and understand how uniforms were like in the past, the main highlight of the display was that visitors could borrow the uniforms real quickly and snap a photo of themselves in a realistic mockup of a classroom from the past.

(Credits: 하늘이햐@ Naver)

The Seoul Education Museum is a must-go for all the history junkies and curious creatures out there! Do note that this museum is relatively foreigner-unfriendly (aka not a lot of English signs) but if you’re just there to take a look, it’s all good. Entrance is free and the museum is open every day except on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month and on public holidays.

Address: 24 Bukchon-ro 5-gil, Jongno-gu, Seoul (서울종로구북촌로5길48 정독도서관)
Opening Hours: 9am to 6pm (Monday to Friday), 9am to 5pm (Saturday & Sunday)

[K-Movie] Experience the Crisis that shook Korea with “Default” – Coming Soon 3 January

In this cruel world where it’s either you eat or be eaten, people will do whatever it takes to be successful, even if it means that they have to overstep boundaries. The film “Default” depicts a series of happenings that took place in the year 1997, a year that shook this Asian Tiger to its core.

Known for its bustling economy and financial stability, Korea joined the league of OCED regions earlier in 1997, only to face a sudden economic downturn that tore the country and its people apart. As uncertainty and chaos invade the citizens and as the country faces an imminent bankruptcy that threatens to cut off their livelihoods, join the lives of 3 very different people as they maneuver their way in this unsettling period.

This is the first Korean film that touches on how Korea suffered from the head-on collision with the Asian Financial Crisis. With immersive acting and an enthralling storyline, “Default” managed to claim the #1 spot the day it debuted on the Korean box office charts, with admissions surpassing more than 315,000 on the day itself.

Featuring a lineup of world-class actors from Korea and France, such as Kim Hye-soo, Yoo Ah-in, Huh Joon-ho and Vincent Cassel, this film is set to dominate the world stage as well.

Known for his award-winning directing abilities, “Default” is spearheaded by Director Choi Kook-hee, the same person behind the film “Split” (2016). As the film progresses, be amazed at how meticulous the attention to details in this film are.

With carefully sourced locations and wardrobes that retain the nostalgic feel of the 1990s, the team behind “Default” were successfully able to capture the atmosphere of that tumultuous year, bringing the past to life.

Film Synopsis:

“Investors, leave Korea. Right now.”

Si-hyun (KIM Hye-soo), the monetary policy manager at the Bank of Korea, predicts a massive national financial crisis and reports it to the Director. The Director doesn’t schedule an emergency summit until 10 days later but does it without notifying the public of the situation. Si-hyun urges for the crisis to be announced in order to warn people of the looming disaster, but her plea is ignored. The summit is held behind closed doors.

Jung-hak (YOO Ah-in), a financial consultant, notices Korea is suddenly hemorrhaging foreign funds, and he learns the reason is that international finance firms have ordered an all-out investment withdrawal from the country, which has caused the credit rating to plummet. He hands in his resignation and decides to play the odds on what he’s sure is a coming crisis. He secretly starts gathering investors willing to do the same.

Gap-su (HUH Joon-ho), a family man who runs a small tableware factory, has a big break and wins a contract with a department store. The fact that the price settlement terms equal to little more than a promissory note concerns him only briefly, and oblivious to the looming financial upheaval, Gap-su signs the contract.

The Managing Director of IMF (Vincent CASSEL) comes to Korea just one week before the country goes bust, and that is when those who try to prevent the crisis, those who seek to take advantage of it, and those only trying to protect their livelihood are caught in the wake of a national bankruptcy

[COVER] The Greatest Moments We’d Remember From IU’s 10th Anniversary Tour Concert in Singapore

Singapore fans were left emotional and contented after IU‘s concert here last Saturday, 15 December, at The Star Theatre. The K-pop darling was in town to perform at her 10th Anniversary Tour concert, which saw 5,000 ardent fans filling the concert hall and celebrating the best of her greatest hits together.

Despite taking 10 years to finally embark on a concert tour out of Korea, the humble singer took to stage and expressed her gratitude to fans for their love and support over the years. She was met with passionate cheers and applauses from the fans as the concert opened to a great fanfare with songs like “The Red Shoes”, “Cruel Fairy Tale” and “dlwlrma”.

Titled “이지금 dlwlrma”, IU explained that the theme of her 10th Anniversary Tour concert falls under movies of different genres. Her concert was like an enchanting musical, and if anything, it was a high quality show from the start till the end. From the stage props to the detailed choreographies, costumes, videos, her very own live band and dancers, we can tell that IU has put in a lot of effort to create a memorable and great show for her fans.

Just like how she is an all-rounder in various genres of music, she’s also able to pull off different styles and concepts well. The audiences had goosebumps when she belted out the three high notes at the end of her signature song “Good Day”, and everyone was in awe when the stage transformed into a movie theatre setting right after for “Between The Lips (50cm)”.

In the second part of the concert, IU mentioned this segment as her favorite as she’ll get to hear the voices of fans when they sing along to her songs like “Friday” and “Meaning of You”.

“This segment is about love and farewells. If I were to describe it as a movie genre, it would be similar to melodrama.” — IU

She also sang a Mandarin song (爱情 by Karen Mok) as a special gift for Singapore fans, and continued with “Gloomy Clock” to which she added, was a song that has been of a great comfort to her. The latter song was not in her original setlist, but she’d wanted to sing it during her concert and dedicate it to someone whom she misses dearly, paying tribute to the late SHINee member, Jonghyun, who composed and sang this song with her.

Moving on to the third segment of the concert where it features songs that she personally wrote (such as “Twenty-Three”, “Zeze”, “BBIBBI” and “Palette”), IU revealed that she enjoys song-writing as much as singing. She confessed that she used to write about dark and gloomy lyrics, but is now focusing on topics like love and comfort thanks to her fans whom have shaped her to become a better person.

Fans were also treated to an adorable side of the singer when she brought her Marshmallow mascots to stage during the performance of “Marshmallow”, a hit track that she released 9 years ago in 2009. Sadly, IU has also mentioned that this will be the last time for her to perform “Marshmallow” and “Boo” at her concerts, as she would like to leave behind the cute moments that should be meant for her younger self.

During the encore stage, IU presented fans with sentimental tracks “Through The Night” and “Dear Name”, dominating the stage with her presence and solid vocal. The concert was supposedly drawn to a close after she exited the stage and credits being rolled on the screen, but IU returned on stage dressed in a casual t-shirt and surprised fans with two more songs, completely unplanned.

She did not plan for the second encore as their crew was in a rush to pack up and depart for their flight to Bangkok (for her concert the following day), but being such a sweetheart (as her fans have known her to be), she’d wanted Singapore fans to experience the re-encore as well. That, plus allowing fans to take photos and record the final two performances, leaving everyone in much delight. IU has also promised to make another trip back here with her family next year, and we definitely look forward to catch her return to Singapore again!
