We Dove Deep Into the Magic with Jackson Wang at His Singapore Concert

There’s no better way to welcome the Christmas weekend than to spend it with the Magic Man himself, Jackson Wang. He is no stranger to Singapore, having visited many times before, both as an athlete and a member of the idol group GOT7. For the first time in his 8-year career, the Hong Kong entertainer brought his first-ever solo world tour to the sunny island and boy, was the show a feast for our eyes, ears and soul.

The Magic Man World Tour is essentially a concert that details the story of his life, with Jackson Wang as the main narrator and performer. Throughout the night, the audience was brought on a whirlwind adventure and learnt of the peaks and valleys Jackson Wang faced to become the performer we now know and love. The long-awaited concert took place on a late Friday evening, and although it drizzled, fans from all over the region gathered at the venue, high on adrenaline.

I came to the concert with knowledge of Jackson blank as a sheet of white paper. But like magic, it became a beautiful collage of colour as I saw his many faces. The show was split into different segments, each portion giving us an insight into an inner corner of his mind. It started with him showing his humane yet vulnerable self before we got to see the energetic and excitable persona that is usually seen in public. Towards the end, Jackson filled the show with performances full of hope, promise, and visions for the future.

The sights and sounds from the concert were very different from what we envisioned it to be. It was an audio and visual spectacle, one that was filled to the brim with tons of explosive pyrotechnics and fantastic props. We also loved how there was an entire ensemble of dancers as well as a live band troupe!

The performer and his team spared no expense in making this tour a truly magical experience for all attendees. Another part that stood out was how the setlist was seamlessly connected to the point it was hard to tear yourself away from the stage. Before the crowd could even tell, the show was down on its final legs. Indeed, every segment of the concert was an experience to behold. Jackson Wang is a performer with a great passion for the stage and a love for the audience.

Jackson’s performances were also very different from whatever he’s done in the past as a member of GOT7. Compared to back then, his discography has evolved into something much more mature and varied in terms of genres. We heard more of his singing and were pleasantly surprised at how powerful and ranged it was. His extensive discography allowed him to showcase his outstanding vocal and dancing capabilities. Our favourites from Friday night were Blow, Just Like Magic and LMLY, hands down. We can say with much confidence that he transcended the label of a K-Pop idol to transform into a talented world star.

Overall, it was indeed a concert unlike another. At times, we felt like we were in a play with all the exciting theatrical performances; at others, it felt like a party where everyone knew one another. Occasionally, it also felt like the audience was in for a motivational pep talk from an older brother. One thing’s for sure; there was a sort of magical and genuine connection that was present between the performer and the audience.

Reviewing K-Beauty Products I’ve Tried In 2022

It’s the end of 2022, which means it’s a good time to do a short review of all the K-beauty products I’ve tried this year. I didn’t try many products as I am trying to be more conscious with my purchases. Overall, I’m quite satisfied with my purchases especially since I bought all of these when they were on sale. Read on to find out what I think about these products!

COSRX One Step Original Clear Pad, $22.90

Each tub of this contains 70 cotton pads pre-soaked in essence to remove dead skin cells and excess sebum. This can be used wipe off excess dirt on the face, and has an embossed side that helps with exfoliating. Key ingredients include willow bark water, BHA and tea tree oil. I personally really like this product and have already repurchased another tub! This is extremely gentle on the skin as it only contains 1% BHA, so it’s great for those with sensitive skin. Other than using the pads on my face, I also use them on my back to keep back acne at bay.

Available online on Shopee and Watsons, and at Watsons retail stores.

beplain Clean Ocean Moisture Sunscreen, $39

The beplain Clean Ocean Moisture Sunscreen is a chemical sunscreen and has a PA index of PA++++ and SPF index of SPF 50+, offering high protection. This particular sunscreen is targeted at those with dry or combination skin, while the brand’s other Clean Ocean Nonnano Mild Suncreen is targeted at those with oily skin. I like how sheer the Clean Ocean Moisture Sunscreen is, leaving no white cast. It’s also lightweight and has a moisturising texture as claimed.

Available online on Shopee.

LANEIGE NEO Cushion Matte in 17N, $63

I have been using LANEIGE’s cushions for a long time and I loved one of their past (now discontinued) cushions, so it was a no-brainer for me to get this. The NEO Cushion Matte delivers a matte finish and it claims to be transfer-proof with full, concealer-like coverage. Having used this for some time, I felt that it still does transfer a bit under our Singapore weather. I would also say it offers medium coverage rather than full coverage. Overall, I still like this cushion as it’s lightweight, offers a decent amount of coverage and transfers minimally. However, if you have dry skin, make sure to moisturise well before applying this as I find that it can get patchy and cling onto dry parts of the face.

Available online on Shopee, Lazada, Sephora and LANEIGE, and at Sephora and LANEIGE retail stores.

hince Mood Enhancer Water Liquid Glow in W001 New Allure, $34

The hince Mood Enhancer Water Liquid Glow is a new liquid lip product launched earlier this year, and I got mine in the shade New Allure. As its name suggests, this lip product has a somewhat watery feeling to it upon application and this helps the product glide on easily. It’s also lightweight and comfortable on the lips. As for how it looks on the lips, it is fairly pigmented and provides a nice natural shine to the lips.

Available online on Shopee.

Crime-Action Series ‘Big Bet’ Confirms A Season 2 in 2023

2022 has been a terrific year of K-drama releases and it seems like avid K-drama fans can look forward to end their year with yet another thrilling, nerve-racking, and nail-bitting crime-action series.

Big Bet, directed and written by Kang Yoon-sung, is a drama that revolves around a risk-taking and reputed self-made Casino King, Cha Mu-sik (played by Choi Min-sik) in the Philippines, who after being tangled in an intricate murder case tries to find his reputed place back in the game. Detective Oh Seung-hoon (played by Son Sukku) who is dispatched to the police desk in the Philippines tries to solve this murder case while chasing after Mu-sik. Jeong-pal, the loyal right-hand man of Mu-sik, is played by Lee Dong-hwi.

Joined by versatile names in the K-industry, Big Bet also stars Heo Sung-tae (Squid Game; The Silent Sea), Kim Joo-ryeong (Squid Game), Jin Sun-kyu (The Outlaws; Extreme Job), Son Eun-seo (Voice S1-4), and more.

During the drama press conference on Wednesday (Dec 14), the actors gave a glimpse into their characters and shared the bond they formed with the role they are playing and the circumstances they experienced during filming. Veteran actor Choi Min-sik, who has been away from the TV scene for 25 years, remarked that it didn’t feel like he took a long time off the screen since the scenes were realistic and the actors portrayed near-to-reality emotions while shooting. For him, it was challenging yet fun to play the role of Mu-sik.

Lee Dong-hwi, who plays the right-hand man of Mu-sik, further elaborated about the realistic scenes, “This show provides a lot of food for thought. I constantly deliberated what choices I would have made if I was in Jeong-pal’s shoes. As he (Jeong-pal) encounters many situations, I try to portray the circumstances with a sense of realism.”

For characterization, the actor revealed that he focused on visuals to portray a mature-looking personality that would fit the character.

Describing the experience on working with Choi Min-sik on set, Son Sukku has got nothing but only praises to share, “It was a whole new experience for me. I was in awe and have total respect for him.”

Both characters worked in close proximity throughout the drama and Son shared that Choi’s acting was so real and natural that it didn’t feel like those scenes were acted out.

Although most part of the scenes were filmed in the Philippines, Director Kang further shared that he focused on highlighting the realism and production in the series, which is something that viewers can look out for while watching the drama.

Big Bet premieres on Dec 21 and is now streaming on Disney+. The series will return for a Season 2 at the beginning of 2023 after airing 8 episodes for its first season.

‘Work Later, Drink Now’ Returns With Season 2, Cast Shares What To Expect

Based on a popular webtoon, ‘Work Later, Drink Now’ tells the story of three women whose life philosophies revolve around having a drink after getting off work. Lee Sun-bin stars as television writer Ahn So-hee, Han Sun-hwa plays yoga instructor Han Ji-yeon, Apink’s Jung Eun Ji plays origami YouTuber Kang Ji-gu, and Super Junior’s Choi Siwon plays producing director Kang Book-goo.

The first season follows the story of these three best friends who always meet up for drinks at the end of the day, seeking comfort from one another and getting drunk together. In the second season, the trio returns with more entertaining antics and relatable, heart-warming life lessons.

In an interview with the cast, the stars shared how viewers can look forward to the new characters introduced, and expect even greater energy and chemistry amongst the characters in the second season. Lee also shares how the second season has “gotten to a much bigger scale”, which viewers can anticipate.

Han adds, “If the first season was mostly set at Obokjib, or episodes of the three girls as they shared drinks, this time round, the story will change a little, and there will be a lot of deep meaning embedded in the story. So, I think a lot of people will relate to this season too. We think you’ll like it.”

Jung also shared a spoiler, “There was a situation that involved leaving the civilised world behind. We filmed in the summer, but the scene was set in the winter. The art team worked so hard for us. And we did it all by ourselves with no stunt people.” Choi expressed in agreement, “We really travelled all over the country.”

On how the characters will be like this season, Han shares, “Ji-yeon still puts her soul into it. This time, she still has high energy levels, but a little different. It is different because her situation is different. That bright and positive energy from the first season is still there but… I almost dropped a spoiler!”

As for character Ji-gu, Jung shares, “This is the first time I am filming a second season for a drama. I’ve been curious to know how the characters have been doing, because the ending in Season 1 was both happy and not that happy. I wonder how things have gone since then. I wanted to know how they’ve been doing so it’s really nice to see them again. I’m home and I’m back as Ji-gu. But Ji-gu also felt unfamiliar in a way. It feels like Ji-gu has changed a little, so I find it a little difficult to bring her back to the original character.”

‘Work Later, Drink Now 2’ will premiere with two back-to back episodes this Saturday, 10 December at 9.15pm on tvN Asia (Singtel TV CH 518, StarHub TV CH 824), 24 hours after Korea’s broadcast. Two episodes will follow every subsequent Saturday.

Reborn Rich’s Song Joong Ki Says He is “Just An Ordinary Student” Unlike His Character Jin Do Joon

Lead actor of Reborn Rich, presently the most-watched miniseries of 2022, Song Joong Ki is in town to promote the fantasy revenge drama where he made a public appearance at the press conference held at Resorts World Sentosa.

The K-drama has been a hot topic since its premiere last month — just 8 episodes in, Reborn Rich has already surpassed the highest viewership rating that was achieved by Extraordinary Attorney Woo this year. In response to the positive reaction from viewers all over the world, Song confesses, “Frankly, I never expected this,” he continues, “because I heard many Asian audience love rom-com K-dramas and this is not a rom-com series”.

What Made Him Say Yes

Reborn Rich is based on a hit web novel and Song Joong Ki plays two characters – Yoon Hyun Woo, a loyal employee of the Sunyang Group who dies after being wrongly framed by a member of the Sunyang family, and Jin Do Joon, the youngest grandson of the group whom he is reborn as.

Song reveals that there are two main reasons on why he chose this project, “First of all, I trusted the writer (Kim Tae-hee). I did one drama with her 12 years ago – Sungkyunkwan Scandal. At that time, both of us were rookies and that was her first project. So, we had a common thing together as we started (around the same time) together.”

He adds, “Secondly, it’s my co-actor Mr. Lee Sung-min. Acting with him is the biggest thing for me. We almost met in some project previously but it didn’t happen eventually. So, I’m always looking forward to meeting him in a drama series or movie. He’s a great actor and it’s a big honour to work with him.”

Filming in Turkey

Sharing on his overseas filming experience in Turkey, the actor only has good things to say. He praises all the actors and filming crew on set, and shares that the drama scenes filmed there were essential to bringing out his character Hyun Woo’s emotions.

“The shoot in Turkey was good for my character. I could express Hyun Woo’s worst emotions deeply, like the conflicts that he was facing. We felt that this overseas shoot made the project more vibrant and (produced a) good quality.”

Just “An Ordinary Student”

Comparing his student days to Jin Do Joon’s in the ’80s, Song Joong Ki chuckles and reveals that he attended an all-male middle & high school, and hence it was only until university did he come across female students, “So I was happy in university (laughs)”.

Song claims that he was just “one of them”, the “ordinary student” who is “normal, silent, and kind of boring” – as quoted during the press conference.

Most Memorable Scenes

On the most unforgettable scenes in Reborn Rich, the Korean heartthrob hints at an upcoming scene with his grandfather Jin Yang-chul in Episode 12 & 13. He also picks the ending scene in Episode 1, where Hyun Woo had his last take on the rocks next to the sea, “Hyun Woo knew that he will be killed soon, and I love the expressions and emotions he delivered at that moment before he died.”

With every new episode keeping viewers on the edge of their seats, we can’t wait to see how the revenge plot will unfold in the second part of the drama. Reborn Rich is now streaming on Viu, with new episodes every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (same day as Korea).

A Night of Revelry and Revelations with LISA on “Regal Planet”

BLACKPINK’s LISA charmed audiences at a virtual party on “Regal Planet”, a glittery metaverse created by the world’s leading blended Scotch Whisky, Chivas. It was a night of revelry and revelations as the brand’s Asia ambassador LISA, who crafted a cocktail, interacted with audiences and shared her story of rising through life’s challenges.

The avant-garde event was held on 27 November to celebrate Chivas and LISA’s new collaboration, the Chivas 18 x LISA Limited Edition. The global superstar unveiled the bold and beautiful bottle, which she co-designed with Chivas. As a larger-than-life version of the Chivas 18 appeared, LISA said: “The Chivas 18 limited edition combines classic elegance with modern design. My favourite part is the new monogram, my neon signature and my ‘star’ drawing on the bottle.”

Reminiscent of the exquisite whisky, “Regal Planet” was painted in shimmery gold and amber hues. Visitors could explore and interact in the different rooms of this virtual world. A highlight of the sprawling venue was the “Hustle Area”, where 3D Chivas bottles featuring cocktail recipes were on display. Party-goers also learnt how to craft LISA’s special Chivas cocktail, Pink Spice.

The singer-dancer turned mixologist for a night concocted her signature Pink Spice cocktail. The delightful Whisky Highball cocktail blends Chivas 18 with notes of tea, citrus and spice. LISA liberally added dashes of tabasco to the drink, as she exclaimed: “I like spicy.” Out of the 85 rich-tasting notes within Chivas 18, LISA revealed that her favourite notes are dark chocolate, toffee and vanilla.

Surrounded by avatars of BLINKS from around the world, LISA took time to share updates about her music career. She said: “After our second album “Born Pink”, we are quite busy with our world tour.”

The wildly popular BLACKPINK is in the midst of its “Born Pink” world tour, performing in Asia, North America and Europe. The tour comes hot on the heels of the girl group’s second studio album, “Born Pink”, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart.

To the audience, LISA is a confident and consummate performer. However, LISA candidly admits that she gets nervous at times before stepping onto the stage. On how she encourages herself when nerves hit, she said: “I won’t be able to keep it to myself. That wouldn’t make it any better. As I keep up my passion, I will also share support from my members, making sure that we’re all doing great. This is really important to us.”

Amid the resounding applause after every performance, LISA pauses to reflect on how the magic happened onstage. She said: “I think every successful stage comes from the hard work we put in, so every time I perform, it’s like I’m sharing the joy with everyone.”

Feted by millions for her talent and style, LISA believes that success is borne out of a team effort. Channelling the empowering spirit of the “I Rise, We Rise” campaign by Chivas, she said: “No one is successful alone. With like-minded people, we face challenges together and that is how we get ready for our unknown future.”

The night ended with a resplendent display of virtual fireworks as LISA bade her fans goodbye. She said: “It’s been an amazing time with you all on Regal Planet. But I guess it’s time to say goodbye. Let’s continue our “I Rise, We Rise” legacy.”

Sound Terror Action Movie ‘DECIBEL’ Starring Kim Rae Won and Lee Jong Suk To Premiere in Singapore

Released in South Korea on November 16th, DECIBEL is a ‘Sound Terror Action’ movie portraying a bomb designer (played by Lee Jong-suk) who attempts to occupy a city with a special bomb responsive to a certain degree of the big noise, and a former navy commander (played by Kim Rae-won) who became his target. This much anticipated movie is set to premiere in Singapore cinemas on December 1st.

One of the highlights of this movie is the unique subject of the ‘Sound-responsive Bomb’, a specially designed bomb which senses noise. When it reaches to a certain degree of noise, the remaining time to the explosion will drop by half. And when it passes its limit of noise, the bomb explodes.

In DECIBEL, these bombs are being planted in the middle of the city where no one can control the noise. This uncontrollable ‘Noise’ becomes the trigger of the bomb, boosting its strength in genre as the background of the movie is getting expanded to the entire city.

On top of the distinctive element which doubles the immersion and tension of the movie, audiences can also look forward to the unpredictable story depicted through the tight confrontation of the two main characters, ‘the former Navy Commander who became the target of terrorism’ and ‘the Bomb Designer who once was a Navy Lieutenant & Mensa member’.

DECIBEL stars Kim Rae-won, Lee Jong-suk, Jung Sang-hoon, Park Byung-eun, Lee Sang-hee, Cho Dal-hwan, Cha Eun-woo, and Lee Min-ki.

Movie Synopsis:
Don’t make a noise otherwise the bomb will go off.

Former lieutenant commander Do-yeong (Kim Rae-won) suffers from PTSD caused by the hellish submarine accident in which he lost his colleagues. Even though he is revered as a national hero, he feels guilty and tormented by his own family estrangement.

One day, Do-yeong receives a cryptic phone call from a mysterious person, threatening he’ll blow up a football stadium with improvised explosives triggered by a certain decibel. In the nick of time, Do-yeong saves innocent lives but the terrorist remains intent on inflicting further casualties, including Do-yeong’s wife and daughter. Now he must race against the clock to track the terrorist down and save his family as well as other people. Amid this impossible task, the unforeseen consequences of a secret he left buried in the deep sea resurfaces.

[K-Movie] Suspense Thriller ‘CONFESSION’ Starring So Ji Sub and Kim Yun Jin Comes To Singapore Cinemas

The story of CONFESSION is about a man who becomes a suspect in a closed-door mystery, and the attorney who must prove him innocent. This highly anticipated film centers around So Ji-sub who plays Yoo Min-ho, the head of a promising IT company whom one day becomes the sole suspect in a murder case in which his girlfriend is the victim. When all evidence points to him as the murderer, he meets Attorney Yang Shin-ae (played by Kim Yun-jin) who has a 100% acquittal rate. The story begins when these two people sit down together to assemble the pieces of the puzzle.

The central axis on which the film CONFESSION is structured is the conversation between Yoo Min-ho who claims he is innocent, and Attorney Yang who reconstructs the details of the case based on his testimony. A sharp tension arises between Yoo, who tells of the events that led him to the scene of the crime in a hotel room, and Yang, who continues to find holes in his story.

In a situation where all the evidence points to him as the culprit, Yang, a talented lawyer with the ability to transform guilt into innocence, makes use of Yoo’s psychology to create a perfect scenario that will prove his innocence, while coaxing out the truth that he refuses to reveal. The tense psychological warfare and fierce tug-of-war between these two will be a key reason to watch this film.

With the other cast members like Nana, who plays Kim Se-hee, the woman that holds the key to the case, and Choi Kwang-il, who plays Han Young-seok, a man who will reveal another hidden crime, CONFESSION raises the tension and is set to deliver an unexpected twist that will keep the audience glued to their seats.
