Show Review

Less than two years into their debut, K-pop girl band IVE found themselves in a sellout crowd at Singapore’s The Star Theatre yesterday (30 Jun).
The ladies were here for their first fan concert titled The Prom Queens.
The definition of a fan concert is not clearly spelt out. But my guess is that it’s a mashup of a fan meet and a concert. Probably with more emphasis on the latter.
It’s likely that they opted for such a format since the band’s discography is not sufficiently robust just yet for a full show. After all, it’s less than two years since their debut in late 2021.
But with these segments, IVE successfully served a 2½-hour set to local fans.

The sextet packed some interactive trivia games between their high-octane performances, where members became students of a fictitious IVE Academy.
But these trivia questions asked were not your typical general knowledge questions. Instead, they’re oddly specific, which made it especially humorous for both the crowd and the band.
IVE members were quizzed on what object would always be found in member Liz’s bag (it’s eyedrops, but she didn’t bring it to the show venue today). And the names of MINIVE, the line of character plush dolls modelled after the group.
These games also ran in conjunction with the theme of the show. Members who answer questions correctly will earn points, and the duo with the highest score would be crowned prom queens. And we see the girls sticking to that theme loyally.
They kicked off the show dressed in high school uniform-inspired outfits, bringing a series of hits such as After Like (2022) and Take It (2021).

IVE also performed earworms like Love Dive (2022), Eleven (2021) and I Am (2023), which spun into a meme that went TikTok-viral recently.
Exclusive to their fan concert tour, the girls also staged a live performance of their pre-release single Kitsch (2023).
Performing their own catchy hits would have already been an auditory feast in itself. But they didn’t stop short there.

Members appeared in duos for a special corner of song covers, with Rei and Wonyoung leading with a sassy rendition of Meghan Trainor’s Me Too (2016).
Liz and Yujin worked their vocal cords with Jessie J’s Flashlight (2015). And Gaeul and Leeseo take on Blackpink’s Kill This Love (2019).
