Singapore is about to celebrate Chinese New Year, and we’re about to usher in the Year of the Dragon, or the Year of the Blue Dragon, to be specific.

Like in South Korea, the dragon is considered the most auspicious zodiac sign.

Some of the qualities that those born in the year of the dragon possess are courage, tenacity, and creativity, among others. In Korean culture, the dragon holds a special meaning too.

The word dragon, or yong in Korean, seems frequently used in Korea.

The now-inactive baseball team was known as “Cheongnyong,” which translates to blue dragon in Korean. There’s also the prestigious annual Blue Dragon Film Awards, perhaps a representation of how emblematic the dragon is.

The dragon symbolises success and royalty in Asian culture.

Majestic and commanding, kings don exquisite clothing embellished with intricate dragons as a symbol of prosperity and power — think the magnificent clothing kings wear in South Korean period dramas.
