Show Review: Solar proves her versatility with musical hits, solo songs and more

Those familiar with the K-pop girl group MAMAMOO would know their leader, Solar. By extension, you’d definitely know of her solo hits like Colours (2024), Spit It Out (2020) and Honey (2022).

Taking the Capitol Theatre stage last Saturday (27 Jul) for her second solo concert Colours, she performed a setlist that lasted 2½-hours.

Read on for four highlights from the show.

1. Colourful segments

With her second solo concert named Colours after her latest hit, Solar named the different segments of her concert after, as the name suggests, different colours.

Naming the different segments by colours was very apt as it was chosen based on the emotions each colour exuded.

For instance, one of the segments was Blue as it had heavy ballads and melancholic tracks, such as Love Has Gone (2024). And the colour blue, after all, naturally corresponds to melancholy.

2. A versatile artist

Being a veteran in the industry, Solar is one of the most versatile artists who has proven themselves worthy time and time again.

Ever since her debut with MAMAMOO, Solar has dabbled in different genres of music. This includes, but is not limited to, pop, ballads, and cabaret.

And she aces every genre she sings.

From belting to rapping, it was definitely not a feat for Solar. Undoubtedly, her vocal prowess is the one to beat.

She also demonstrated her versatility through different types of dance ranging from girl style for pop hits like Honey (2022), to vogueing for Colours (2024), and cabaret for Big Booty (2022).

3. Covers, covers, covers

On top of performing her own songs, Solar also sang covers of hits. Not only live but also in videos screened in between segments.

She sang hits like Beyoncé’s Crazy In Love (ft. Jay-Z) (2003), Christina Aguilera’s Candyman (2006), Sia’s Chandelier (2014) and Britney Spears’ Oops!… I Did It Again (2000).

For her last segment, she covered songs like Hozier’s Take Me To Church (2014), Sam Smith’s Unholy (ft. Kim Petras) (2022), and Part Of Your World (1989) from the movie The Little Mermaid’s soundtrack.

Most importantly, for her Singapore leg of the tour, Solar sang one of our country’s most iconic hits, Home by Kit Chan (1998).

This was met by deafening cheers from the patriotic crowd who sang along with gusto. Call it a timely celebration as Singapore will soon celebrate her birthday in a week’s time.

4. Mata Hari

Unquestionably, Solar is a woman of many talents. She is not only an idol, she is also an actress. If you didn’t know, Solar made her theatrical debut in the musical Mata Hari back in 2022.

Fans were in for a treat as Solar incorporated three of the musical’s numbers, C’est La Vie, The Girl I Used To Be, and One Last Time, into her concert. This was complete with acting, as if we were watching her in the musical, and not her concert.

Momentarily, we were not at the Capitol Theatre watching Solar perform, but instead, transported back in time to France in 1910 with Mata Hari.
