Hallyu Spotlight: Four things about Disney+’s upcoming noir mini series The Tyrant

Disney+’s newest noir action mini-series The Tyrant promises to keep you riveted to your seat with its high-tension and intense pursuit.

Look forward to an adrenaline-pumping ride revolving around four individuals with different goals who are after the stolen last sample of The Tyrant program. Run by a group within the South Korean government, this program created a top-secret bioenhancer that gives people superhuman strength.

Below, HallyuSG shares four highlights of The Tyrant; and why you should count down to its highly-anticipated release on 14 Aug.

1. Director Park Hoon-jung’s debut series

Director Park Hoon-jung’s name is no stranger in the movie realm, particularly in the noir-action arena. He is best known for The Witch 1: The Subversion (2018) and The Witch 2: The Other One (2022). His other acclaimed films include Night In Paradise (2020) and The Childe (2023).

A seasoned and experienced movie director, The Tyrant will mark his venture into K-dramas. And did you know that The Tyrant was initially set out to be a movie; but later shifted towards a four-episode mini-drama?

2. Strong cast with a wide acting spectrum

Put together a powerful Avengers-like cast, each with diverse skills to bring to the table and you’re in for a fully immersive ride. When asked what viewers can look forward to, Director Park Hoon-jung specifically highlighted the vast acting spectrum of the strong cast.

The Tyrant stars Cha Seung-won as former NIS agent and meticulous hitman, Im Sang. Newcomer Jo Yoon-su takes on the role of engineer cum infiltrator, Chae Ja-kyung.

Kim Kang-woo and Kim Seon-ho join forces again after demonstrating solid synergy in The Childe. Kim Kang-woo fills the shoes of Paul, a foreign intelligence agent while Kim Seon-ho gives life to Director Choi, the architect behind The Tyrant program.

3. Charms of each character

It is common to use stunt doubles for action scenes.

Though in The Tyrant, veteran actor Cha Seung-won performed most of the action scenes of Im Sang himself. Jo Yoon-su also skilfully carried out many stunts and has proven to be capable of it. She will bring out the unique qualities of Chae Ja-kyung and is one to watch.

Both Kim Kang-woo and Kim Seon-ho’s acting will send tingles down your spine. Kim Kang-woo exudes a different charisma from his previous role as Director Han in The Childe (2023). Kim Seon-ho, on the other hand, adeptly depicts Director Choi, an intriguing, desolate and lonely character.

The charm of this compelling lineup lies in their detailed performance and ability to convey complicated emotions through their eyes and subtle body language.

4. Familiar yet fresh chemistry 

Cha Seung-won, Kim Kang-woo and Kim Seon-ho have all worked with Director Park before. Each is familiar with the working styles of the other, and this might be the formula that translates to their dynamic chemistry on screen.

Jo Yoon-su is the new face who will inject a breath of fresh air into an already comfortable team. Director Park selected Jo from a list of potential candidates as he needed an actor who could capture the mysterious essence of Chae Ja-kyeong.

The audience can anticipate an adrenaline-pumping journey as the story unfolds. Keep your eyes peeled as the Tyrant team is coming. And they will pack a punch, both literally and metaphorically.
