Hallyu Spotlight: 4 Questions with the cast of K-drama Spice Up Our Love

A spin-off of No Gain No Love by Kim, K-drama Spice Up Our Love depicts the love story between the CEO and a nutritionist. In the series, Lee Sang-yi plays Kang Ha-joon, the CEO of a company named GB Electric.

In the series, an R-rated romance web novelist Nam Ja-yeon (played by Han Ji-hyun) unexpectedly transforms into the female lead of her very own novel. And sparks fly between the main characters of the novel thereafter.

HallyuSG sits down with Lee Sang-yi and Han Ji-hyun, as they dish more on the series and detail some of their most memorable moments on set.

First and foremost, congratulations on Spice Up Our Love! Tell us a little bit more about this new series.

Lee Sang-yi (LSY): Spice Up Our Love is a work created by adding imagination to the time when an R-rated romance web novelist in the main series lost her memory (the 20 hours when she fainted while seeing an oncoming car accident).

Han Ji-hyun (HJH): The central theme of Spice Up Our Love is love.

Nam in No Gain No Love is a reality, and Spice Up Our Love is a fictional world like a dream, so it’s a story that happens when she does something she never imagined doing and doesn’t worry about it.

What are some of the most memorable interesting moments on set, during the filming process?

LSY: There are about three scenes of me sleeping, and I fell asleep so deeply that I couldn’t remember each time.

HJH: Every moment was fun. More than anything fun, the most memorable moment was the scene where I was speaking on the rooftop of the hospital at the end.

I had more to film but this was the last scene I filmed with Lee Sang-yi. While filming this scene, it felt like someone I had relied on was leaving me. It also felt like [all the characters] were going away. Thinking that it is within a novel and a drama, I felt so sad and a sense of loss.

Lee spoke his lines in a touching manner, which hurt a lot but was also a great source of comfort. It was a memorable moment while filming.

What was it like working with each other again for this new project?

LSY: I was so delighted to shoot with Han Ji-hyeon again. Even during the filming of No Gain No Love, I always enjoyed filming with her and we always shared jokes.

I was especially worried about Han having to lead Spice Up Our Love from beginning to end. So, I tried to joke around to cheer her up. I’d want to work with her again.

HJH: I loved it. When I watch the drama, I think I miss them more. Even though I’m acting, I imagine the characters still living their lives somewhere out there. I was very happy to be able to participate in a project that could solve this on the one hand.

On the other hand, I thought a lot about what I should not do in order to avoid causing any problems for No Gain No Love. I worried a lot, but I was happy to show a different side of the couple.

If you have only one word, which one would you use to describe Spice Up Our Love?

LSY: Existence.

HJH: Sweet consolation within a dream.
