Rosé says she penned a “disgustingly vulnerable” song about reading hate online

Doomscrolling online can prove an extremely toxic pastime, but it’s hard to avoid as a layman, let alone when you’re famous. For Blackpink’s Rosé, the Internet’s abyss of hate has actually inspired some of her most creative work.

In a new interview with Paper magazine, Rosé, whose real name is Roseanne Park, opened up about a “disgustingly vulnerable” new song she penned.

Its harrowing lyrics explore the pop star’s experience with reading comments about her online—something she says she has wasted a lot of time doing.

“I realised how vulnerable and addicted I was to this [online] world and that craving for feeling like I wanted to be loved and understood,” she told the magazine in a profile story. “I hated that about myself.”

Though she admits to putting on a front, the reality for Park is that she’s had to reconcile with the impacts of these comments—both the positive and the negative.

“In interviews, I’m like nothing really fazes me, you know? But it does,” she continued. “Every word, every comment, it crushes me.”

The song’s title has yet to be disclosed, but its lyrics delve into an intense need for validation after experiencing so much criticism and negative attention.

Tell me I’m that I’m loved/Tell me that I’m worth it and that I’m enough/I need it and I don’t know why.

It’s just one song that will be included in the 27-year-old’s debut solo album, Rosie. During the interview, Park emphasised how every track hits home for her.

“A lot of songs that didn’t make it were the songs where I was like, ‘No, I don’t resonate with that one,’” she said. “All the songs that did the magic made the album.”

Park rose to fame as part of the South Korean pop group Blackpink, alongside fellow members Jisoo, Jennie and Lisa.

Since launching in 2016, the foursome has broken world records and are credited with bringing the K-pop wave to the Western mainstream. They currently boast a collective following of nearly 350 million.

Each member has struck out on their own with solo music, including Rosé, who made her solo debut in 2021.

The lead single for her upcoming album, Apt. (2024), which features Bruno Mars, dropped in October ahead of the December release of Rosie.
