Secret: Untold Melody review: An emotionally moving masterpiece with a perplexing ending

It seems like February is truly the month of love, with many romance dramas slated to drop this month. To add to the line-up, a romance movie, Secret: Untold Melody, will also premiere this month.

Funny enough, the film was known for staying true to its title (talk about secrecy) before its release. Fans have been awaiting its details and release since its announcement some years ago in 2021.

The plot

A remake of the renowned 2007 Taiwanese movie Secret, featuring Jay Chou; this version stars Doh Kyung-soo, Won Jin-ah and Shin Ye-eun. The plot follows that of the Taiwanese production, leaving out some details.

For instance, the female lead in the Taiwanese film had asthma while not in this one. However, the work has remained equally touching, with its touch of fantasy.

The story revolves around a piano prodigy, Kim Yu-jun (Doh Kyung-soo), who has been studying abroad but sustains a wrist injury. To recover from the aftereffects, he travels back to Korea as an exchange student. There, he meets his first love, Yoo Jung-a, in the campus’ infamous old practice room. However, many questions surround Yoo’s identity and she refuses to answer.

Viewers embark on a journey with the male lead to get to the bottom of Yoo’s secret.

The review

Most notably, Secret: Untold Melody has a star-studded cast and they did not disappoint.

Their mastery truly allowed viewers to immerse themselves in the movie and deliver every emotion. Combined with the expressive music in some scenes, the movie presented itself as emotionally moving.

However, this writer thinks that the film’s ending left too many unanswered questions. Akin to the original Chinese version, the movie had a rather confusing ending that did not seem to make logical sense.

If you’re able to look past that, then this movie is definitely worth a watch.
