Review: TXT’s charms transcend boundaries in new VR film

K-pop boy band Tomorrow X Together, better known as TXT, is no stranger to Singapore by now. After all, they have performed on our shores twice, selling out the Indoor Stadium on both occasions.

And if you had missed the boys the previous time they were in town, you can now catch the band in their debut virtual reality (VR) concert, titled Hyperfocus.

The mechanics of a VR concert

As with all VR experiences, I was given a headset embellished with TXT’s logo. The caveat? Eyewear is prohibited.

Once you’ve worn and calibrated it, you can interact with the virtual scenery. The headset could also detect my outstretched hand, which conjured the official TXT lightstick into my palm.

Up close and personal

When the show started, I could choose which of the five members would guide me through the movie. I chose Soobin, the leader of the band.

After making my selection, Soobin reached his hand out, bidding for me to enter the alternate universe with him.

Without a moment to lose, the band dived right into their first performance, Sugar Rush Ride (2023). The boys performed in front of the iconic aged wisteria tree, a prominent feature in their music video. The camera panned from one member to the other, as I admired the band up close.

This is quite unlike live concerts, where the fans are relatively separated from the band on stage.

The band performed a total of six songs, namely Sugar Rush Ride (2023), Magic Island (2019), Good Boy Gone Bad (2023), Tinnitus (2023), Deja Vu (2024), and MOA Diary (2021). With only six songs on the setlist, the movie was only an hour long.

Despite the movie’s short setlist, the boys were able to demonstrate their versatility, from emotional ballads to heavy dance tracks.

Safe to say, it was a one-of-a-kind immersive experience not to be missed, especially if you are a fan of the band.

Each ticket gets you two random photocards exclusive to the screening of this VR concert, held at Golden Village Bugis+ from 10 Apr (Thu) till 27 Apr (Sun). Tickets start at S$37 for GV Movie Club members and S$39 for the general public.
