In the K-pop world, where idols debut as young as 14 or 15 years old, age is a critical factor. But unorthodox K-pop girl group Mamadol is here to beat that stereotype.
They are a six-membered group formed through tvN’s reality programme Mama The Idol (2021).
Rather than a debut per se, these ladies are making a comeback into the industry with their renewed identities. So strictly speaking, they’re not new faces.
The group comprises Kahi (ex-After School), Jungah (ex-Jewelry), Byul, Yang Eun-ji (ex-Baby V.O.X Re.V), Hyun Jyu-ni and Sunye (ex-Wonder Girls).
Currently, they have only dropped one digital single Mama The Idol (2022). Then, they were met with roaring support from fans, giving hope to other mothers who wish to continue to pursue their careers and passions.
On a larger scale, this also signals the change in attitudes of the Korean music industry, one which has long conformed to orthodox stereotypes and standards.
What makes Mamadol so special is that their comeback is just like any other K-pop group. With intense choreography, trendy beats, they’ve learnt to ride on the K-pop wave seamlessly.
They’ve learnt the trends, rather than sticking with what was popular in their heyday.
While this is a one-off project, it sets the stage for more possibilities of what a K-pop idol can truly be.
