[K-Movie] ‘Hansan: Rising Dragon’, Prequel to Korea’s Highest Grossing Blockbuster, Gets Premiere Date in Singapore

HANSAN: RISING DRAGON, the prequel to Korea’s highest grossing blockbuster Roaring Currents, will hit Singapore cinemas on 18 August 2022. The highly anticipated prequel topped the Korean box office and accumulated more than 2 million admissions over its opening weekend!

This film is the second instalment of the ‘Admiral Yi Sun-sin Trilogy’, which is based on true accounts of the celebrated historical figure. Roaring Currents (2014), the first instalment of the trilogy, is the most-viewed film of all time in Korea, with a record admission of more than 17 million.

Directed by Kim Han-min, Hansan: Rising Dragon is a historical war epic depicting the Battle of Hansan Island off the southern coast of Korea in July 1592, where Admiral Yi Sun-sin defeated the larger Japanese forces through intelligent tactics and the use of his signature turtle battleship “Geobukseon”.

As the first decisive victory of the seven-year Imjin War and its countless battles, the Battle of Hansan Island played a pivotal role in reversing Joseon’s fate. Stoking the people’s fierce desire to defend their country, it led to the rising of Joseon’s Righteous Militia across the land.

Calling attention to the battle’s momentous impact that made it a victory like none other, Director Kim Han-min states, “The Imjin War was an unprecedented invasion, a disaster for Joseon. Although the army was pressed into the defensive, Admiral Yi of the Left Jeolla Navy turned the tide of war through the Battle of Hansan Island.”

Hansan: Rising Dragon revisits this naval battle from 430 years ago, delivering to viewers the thrill of that historic victory.

This marks the second film of the trilogy and stars Park Hae-il (as Admiral Yi Sun-sin), Byun Yo-han, Ahn Sung-ki, Son Hyun-joo, Kim Sung-kyu, Kim Sung-kyun, Kim Hyang-gi, Ok Taec-yeon, Gong Myoung and Park Ji-hwan.

Don Lee is back as the beast cop in THE ROUNDUP, a sequel to the 2017 box office hit The Outlaws. Five years on, he will once again play the role of Ma Seok-do, the no holds barred cop who stops at nothing to catch criminals.

Following the huge success of the 2017 movie which surpassed over 6.88 million admissions and is one of the top 3 best-performing crime action films in Korean cinema history, this highly anticipated sequel is definitely one to watch out for in 2022.

Along with Ma Seok-do who’s leading the charge to get rid of vicious criminals that threaten the lives of a peaceful district in Seoul, his Major Crimes Unit will join him in this film to apprehend yet another psychotic killer.

Returning as the same roles in the Major Crimes Unit are actors Choi Guy-hwa (Capt. Jeon), Heo Dong-won (Oh Dong-gyun) and Ha Joon (Kang Hong-seok), as well as Jung Jae-kwang who plays rookie Kim Sang-hoon. One of the film’s most memorable characters, Jang Isu of the Isu Clan, will be played by actor Park Ji-hwan who’s a major scene stealer in The Outlaws.

Actor Son Sukku, who has left a deep impression on the audience in the first series, will return as the vicious villain Kang Hae-sang, who preys on helpless tourists and isn’t afraid of killing off anyone he deems useless.

With THE ROUNDUP achieving the highest box office reservations record for a Korean film in the past three years, the sequel promises to surpass the original film with incredible action that only this franchise can pull off.
